I wonder how they just end up putting thousands of dollars in anyone’s account (unless a check was deposited wrong/wire transfer gone bad). But, this seems like the bank themselves stored the money there which at that point isn’t it her money?
Well no. The money in a bank is not real, it’s just numbers in databases. All sorts of software errors can change the balance of someone’s account incorrectly. That doesn’t make it your money because it isn’t really money. If you were to withdraw it you would be stealing.

There was a really cool story about a guy who deposited one of those fake checks you get in junk mail and due to a confluence of circumstances they actually accepted it. When the guy saw it he knew he was in trouble so he took out a cashiers check and then rented a safety deposit box in the same bank and stuck it in there. He refused to give the check back until they gave him a document stating they absolved him of and legal recourse. It went on for a couple years but he finally prevailed.
Canada was amongst the countries whose banking system required a “bailout” in the ‘08 financial crisis. That bailout consisted of loans from the Canadian government to keep the banks solvent. Since receiving those funds the banks have paid the government back with interest. At no point did the banks take money from their customers. In fact the bailout was to make sure they had enough money to cover all of their customers’ balances.
I said will do, bud. The new law Trudeau passed allows banks to convert customers money into low quality stocks of the bank at whatever value the bank chooses, for whatever reason. I don't care much about how things were done. They don't do much for now.
