I used to think that this is only an American thing until I went to a supermarket with my boss. We were at the counter and the cashier was scanning the items and a couple of them did not get scanned at the first go.
The minute my boss saw this, he went, "So this is free now? Hehehehe." and nudged me.
Smh.
Funny thing about this picture...a guy tried to buy an electric toothbrush for $1, not realizing the price tag was for the non-functioning display model. The guy lost his shit and called the cops, saying he was defrauded. He took his picture and said he'd give it to the cops and Target corporate. The reason he was so jazzed to buy the toothbrush was because he couldn't afford dental insurance.
I was at self checkout at Target and I had a $20 shirt that was the last one of that one. And it didn’t scan. The guy helped me then gave up and was just like *shrug* “just put it in the bag”.
A lot of cashiers really can’t be bothered enough. So if it doesn’t scan, it is sometimes free.
