There's actually a story about him told by his brother on YouTube it's about the whole story of when he was kid and being told to get out of the library. It's actually rather good. Apparently he was like a huge Star trek fan and that's what made him want to become an astronaut.
Actually it was when segregation was still around. Legally the library WAS a whites only library. But he was just this small little boy that he lucked out and the cop who was called told the librarian to let him borrow the books.
The librarian didn't like it because she was a bitter old woman but he came back many times and she still let him borrow the books.
Look up on YouTube Eyes on the stars By storycorps it gives this whole story told by Ronald McNair's brother.
Little extra bit of info:
Yes it was his love of Star Trek that made him want to be an astronaut.
But the person who recruited him to be an astronaut was none other than Nichelle Nichols her self. She played Uhura. One of his idols.
.
I learned that one in third grade.
