I mean- they are both real problems- but the second one doesn’t get as much attention and is one that the ordinary citizen actually might have some ability to do something about. Of course- there is a legitimate argument that politics- slime- it’s an art and a skill. Bulldog blah blah sure- but really- getting enough dirt and leverage on people to make them do what you want, and weaseling into any real power when you’ve got hundreds of other would be despots fighting you- takes time. So you’re usually trading one problem for another.
I once heard someone say that the art of politics is how we disagree without killing each other. I'm starting to think maybe we should change that and let those that wish to practice it compete against each other thunder dome style.
Lol. While (I assume) you are speaking at least somewhat hyperbolically- I myself sometimes think that as well, but then we more or less either end up with the stronger person making all the decisions (not ideal) the person best at cheating the system making all the decisions (basically what we have now..), or mobs of people making the decisions- and having met enough people in my life... I just don’t put much faith in direct democracy. I suppose when we lay it bear- most of us really just want to see the people who’s ways we approve of being the ones who make the decisions- seems self evident and yet talking politics you’ll hear all manner of justifications and rarely just: “I don’t care if it’s wrong- it’s what I want...”
In the blue corner you got SoyBoy McCoy with his black hood, mask, and sling coming out of his mom's basement to campaign to ban firearms.
In the red corner you've got Darcy Deadeye fresh from playing in the sandbox with the 82nd, jumping from a C-130 with her short-barreled AA12, loaded with incendiary flechette, ready to carry out her oath of enlistment and defend against all enemies.
Who will win, I wonder?
I’ve never met an ex marine. Far as I knew that contract was forever- even after you die, they put you on guard duty at the pearly gates. That said- most people I know off active duty split somewhat evenly on the party ticket- with the most common thing being that most support a private individuals right to responsibly and reasonably own firearms, and in general favor freedom and what they see as the greater social good- whatever that may be. Depends on the person and what they’ve seen and been through I guess.
It’s polarizing- some folks grow numb to suffering and justify its existence in the world by framing things as those worthy- or those willing to effect self help, and those not- other take the opposite and become more sensitive to suffering- preferring not to see it in most any form due to the fragility of life. There’s all in between and some reconcile that life can and will by nature be cruel and unfair, sometimes that’s just the way it is- or the necessary evil; but it doesn’t have to be. Talk to anyone long enough and you’ll hit a subject where their feelings on it surprise you based on who you think they are. Most folks just want what they think is best- either for them, or for everyone- but red or blue, land see, air, whatever- folks are often more alike than we are different. We want the same things and just disagree how to get them.
