the SSN is a broken system, you need to protect it, but anyone can ask for it for any situation you're applying for and you just hand it over.

Well, yeah. If they are going to employ you in a non-contract position they need it for payroll tax purposes but you don’t have to provide it until you accept the position.

you don't even need to be employed, just apply for job and you have to give it

You are only required to give your SSN to an employer. Prospective employers can ask for it but you don’t have to legally give it to them. They may not consider your application if you refuse but they can’t compel you.

Yeah, but in many places and for many people the only reasonable way to get a job is to g in ve your SSN.

Correct. To GET a job you have to provide your SSN and two forms of federal ID. To APPLY for a job neither is required legally.

Yes--but I mean your typically have to provide your SSN when you apply to even be considered
