during the testing phase, users were just sitting there, when asked why they were not searching for anything, they stated they were waiting for the rest of the page to load,

The simplicity of the front page is one of the big reasons Google boomed instead of others like Ask Jeeves, along with it's unique search algorithm. It was one of the first sites that implemented 'less is more' in graphic design. It still doesn't 'really' show things like weather, news, or ads but they show them discreetly either by design or links. Front page is still clean as a whistle.
