I see it as him seeing sugar AFTER the glasses go on.

It’s a reference to the movie They Live. You put the glasses on to see the subliminal propaganda telling people to “consume” “reproduce” “obey” etc.

Sugar is just energy for brain like fructose in fruits and vegetables. There is no real difference. Some fruits contain ordinal sugar, for example grapes.
