Martial classes are great. Some of the greatest party members and fun to play. Martial classes often have advantages at lower level especially, and a party of low level wizards and clerics will have trouble surviving things that having martial party member would make much easier. Add on enchanted gear and other items- and a martial character can be quite a threat and very interesting to boot.

That said- in general- they aren’t as “interesting” in many regards. Outside combat and dungeons- but just around towns and at camp- yeah- being able to conjure a mansion or create alternate dimensions, shape shift etc etc makes for generally more “interesting” interactions and way more variety in game play. Most “martial classes” have all sorts of ways to augment or enhance smashing and slicing- but yeah- that’s gonna be a strong component in their problem solving.

And yes- playing spells and counterspells and potions and such to try to get information or influence NPCS can have all sorts of results and unknowns- versus “punch him until he talks...” “intimidate...” I mean- yes- having a low or medium level party with a tank who can punch their way out of many dangerous situations that less physical characters can’t will change the game.

The problem in FF14 I've encountered is that disciples of war and magic earn exp at a far lesser rate than those of the hand; so I've resorted towards using quests for exp, running around as a botanist and harvesting trees n' shit until I get to the objective, then switching, then switching back, completing the quest, then taking my materials and making armor and shit. Today is more about programming my hotbar... that's gonna cost me a couple of hours... and I still have no idea what half the skills I picked up as Archer and Lancer actually do. Anything magic related is pretty easy, as it's been nearly the same for every FF game.

Generally, I have found that the most fun and interesting characters are not defined by their class archetype. We had a party at one time that had the most religious undead barbarian you will evercome across, but she couldn't take claric levels because her god was blind to the undead
