Back in 1987, $250k was a lot of money, more than a nice house, he bought his and a companion ticket at a lower cost. He'd travel to different places, 1st class, on a whim. They tried canceling it before, but they couldn't. Until they realised that he'd give his free companion ticket to anyone, just putting fake names on the booking. The fake names was the grounds for cancelation, he fought it, but obviously lost.
it's two tickets, most often he'd just go somewhere for the day, even just for luch, and it's not just one flight, it's there and back, so two, and using the 2nd ticket it's 4. He bought it and took advantage of it.
if two people fly from one city to another for a lunch and fly back, it's 4 tickets, not 1 flight. He rarely flew alone, sometimes just chatting to someone and bringing them on the 1st class seat next to him.
There is actually a really good article written by his daughter about what happened. It humanizes him and gives a lot more context to the entire situation.
It's on The Guardian website, written by Caroline Rothstein. A basic Google search for "guy who bought unlimited first class ticket" should bring it up
2 flights every day > 13years
4 flights every day - insanity. Airports are horrible places
