While minutes is a bit extreme- cats actually do need to eat at least every 1-2 days. Because of how cat biology works- a cat that hasn’t eaten in in a day or two will start to break down fats- not so different from us- except the cats liver can’t handle it and can be permanently damaged from only a day or two without food. This naturally gives cats a bit of a drive to eat when they can- in nature food is not placed on a plate for them, sometimes it gets away, and they need enough calories to keep them at least fat neutral. Sometimes a “hungry cat” that has been fed just isn’t getting enough protein- for cats protein is an extremely important nutrient-

Worms or other medical problems can cause cats to always eat- but just like humans, cats can develop over eating disorders and psychological addiction to food! Most of the time a mewling and just fed cat isn’t sick- but it’s always good to be sure. Cats are believed to be much like humans in that they may eat from stress, or even boredom. Psychologically- cats may also just want attention- or a certain type of attention they get from being fed by you.

As a fun asides- it’s also believed that is why many cats either won’t eat if you don’t watch, or pester you while they are eating. It can make them feel safe while they eat- knowing you are watching over them, and it can also be about attention. Many cats just like your undivided attention. They may not want to be touched or played with, but just to know that you are focused on them. In some ways, we can relate many of these cat behaviors to human ones. Most people would be uncomfortable if you just plopped food down for them and walked away leaving them alone at the table, and many people sometimes just want attention- but not necessarily physical contact or even conversation.
