You can get a certification to scuba dive too- it’s a piece of paper that says you have met the minimum criteria to be consisted basically competent at a complex task. Yet- about 200 people a year die while diving and countless more have accidents. Many will have their certification expire before they use it. So I mean- having a key opens a door- which door, finding the right one, and stepping through it are all separate issues. Another issue entirely is wether what’s on the other side of the mystery door meets your expectations.

The “bare minimum” just isn’t enough in a competitive world. Making a P40 mustang fighter or a 1960 Ford Mustang doesn’t require the precision or complexity of an F22 or a 2021 Mustang. Designing a reusable rocket for space travel is far more complex than designing the lightbulb. As we continue to reach higher and farther, to try for efficiency and improvement- what WAS good enough last decade will continue to become just ok or worse. Daily life gets easier with progress, but professional life gets harder. You won’t likely die of malaria or have to break your back to have drinking water in a developed country in 2020* but.... when most people have a degree or equivalent experience- graduating college doesn’t make you as special as it did when just being able to read was something that could land you a cushy job.
