For anyone who doesn't know:
The game is town of Salem.
.
In the game there is a faction called the mafia that is supposed to kill the other members of the town.
.
Among others, there are two common mafia roles that can be assigned to players:
Godfather
Mafioso
.
The Godfather can order the Mafioso to kill any town member they choose (the mafioso doesn't get a say).
.
There is also a non-mafia alled a transporter in the game. It can take two characters and switch them around (other players won't know characters have been transported unless they say so the next day) so that whatever was meant to happen to one character will happen to the character they were transported with. [If character A was going to be killed but they are transported with character B, character B will die instead]
.
In this case: the godfather ordered the mafioso to kill someone. The transporter independently swapped the mafioso with the character they were ordered to kill. End result: the mafioso killed themselves
The only successful cure for transporters is a werewolf on the full moon.
.
.
I played a round where there were 3 of the darn things once, and for some reason one of them transported me every damn night.
.
That was confusing enough, but then on one fine night it got even more confusing.
.
-The first transporter transed me as they always did, and swapped me with some random person [Target A.]
-Second transporter was trying to transport target A with Target B. Because of the first transporter, however, I was now at Target A's house, so the second transporter transported me with Target B instead.
-Target B was, shockingly enough, the target of the THIRD transporter that night. But because I'd been transported there, the third transporter got me instead.
.
Long story short: I was mistakenly kidnapped no less than 3 times in a single night (also ended up blackmailed somewhere along the way) and I still have no idea where I spent the night.
Daayum you get around! I've had that happen to me too, not as many times though and that was so frustrating. It's even more annoying when the next day you tell everyone "was transported" and they have to weigh up the odds of being transported 3 times in a row and 3 times in a night.
Haha not even the craziest game I've ever played.
.
But yeah, luckily because so many people were being transported every night it was pretty easy for people to believe I'd been transported. What was difficult was figuring out what literally anyone was in that game.
.
Still less frustrating than trying to convince people you're a survivor when you actually are one..
Oh god I hate, or a vet, no one believes either of those roles especially if someone else claims in first in the chat. The most amount of panic I have is when someone asks for my will and I haven't written anything yet worth noting.
Haha the vet at least people will often stay away out of sheer caution. Although I did play one game where it was set to random. Nearly everyone had a travelling roll. The vet declared themselves day 1 and no one believed them for some reason.
.
Day 2 no less than 8 people were dead - all from visiting the damn vet. Was a bloodbath haha.
.
Tbh the roles I always had issues with was after they added the crusader role.
.
If you don't know, the mechanics for the crusader are basically the crusader picks one target to guard at night. They will then indiscriminately attempt to kill anyone who visits that target during the night (unlike bodyguards they don't die, and they don't kill only hostile targets).
.
The end result of this is usually broken down into:
-Multiple TP roles don't protect the mayor (or whoever) because they assume someone else is doing it and don't want to die
-MULTIPLE TPs guard the mayor, in which case the crusader stabs them in the face and they die needlessly
Had one game where there were a bunch of TP roles and they all kept trying to guard the damn mayor and the crusader wouldn't declare who they were (so they couldn't be protected). By the end of it 2 doctors and a bodyguard were dead, and the evil roles hadn't been involved in any of it.
.
There's also the fun mechanic of multiple crusaders visiting the same target and killing each other..
.
.
But i honestly think Vigilante was the role I had the most trouble with. You scream at people all day that you're a vigilante then you either get murdered/lynched, or they demand you shoot someone, and 9/10 you end up killing a good guy and then you kill yourself anyway -_-
I haven't played with that crusader role that sounds like it would make the game not only difficult but really hard to play cause you don't know who's gonna visit your target.
.
Yes! The vig role is awful, you're pretty much useless. I love those chaotic neutral roles like serial killer or vampire, makes the game more interesting.
It was part of the expansion I think. It actually can be a useful role IF you know there is a crusader and who they're guarding.
.
Haha the neutral roles are a lot of fun. Sadly I suck at all of them. If I were a jester I couldn't get people to lynch me to save my life, but if I'm the freaking mayor people would have me up on the podium by day 2 haha
I'll check it out that sounds fun.
.
Oh my god I know what you mean, convincing people to kill you is hard, I have to someone act suspicious without looking like I want to act suspicious (don't be suspicious don't be suspicioous d-d-don't). It's a lot less pressure when you're a neutral role I think that's what I mainly enjoy about, I don't have to worry bout sides.
I swear to god I can never do it. I tried every tactic I had ever seen, including remaining suspiciously silent in games with a werewolf, sks, etc, and people never lynch me haha. Even try impersonating mediums which is usually the easiest way to get killed, but it never works.
.
Tbh I really dislike playing as mafia and I have no idea why. The neutral roles are so hard to win, but it's nice only being accountable for yourself haha.
.
.
If you enjoy the game then the expansion pack adds a lot to it. Lots of new roles and game modes.
.
They added a "Plaguebearer" role that's a neutral. Your goal being to infect the entire town. Anyone you visit or who visits you or has contact with an already visited person becomes infected. Once the entire down becomes infected you become "pestilence." Once you become pestilence you rampage like a werewolf every night, and the only way you can die is through lynching.
I know! It's like the one time you actually want to die people are suddenly trusting you and everything you say.
.
Yeah I feel that, I think I find being the framer the worst mafia role, I played with this group and no body spoke so I had no clue who was going to die each night so I just had to not use my role or take a risk and hope that the person I picked wasn't the one they were killing.
.
That sounds wicked! I would love that role, it's chaos I love bringing chaos to games in any form. Okay I need to play this expansion pack that sounds too fun.
Framer is definitely awful lol. You never know if you're even accomplishing anything most of the time, and you usually get killed easily. Tbh Janitor is a difficult one, too, if people don't communicate/co-operate. You either don't know who to clean, or multiple people clean the same person, which is a waste.
.
Though it is hilarious when a transporter or a witch get involved and a janitor dies and the cleans themselves and then no-one in-game or in the mafia know wtf is going on..
.
Haha they added quite a few things. The witches have several roles now and act similar to the mafia.
.
Can't remember all the roles, but normal witch is now the "coven leader," there's a necromancer who can use a dead person's role once on someone else in the town, and a poisoner who will poison someone and that character will die after a night goes by.
.
They also added a super-rare role called the juggernaut, which basically starts with the a ability to kill a person every other night. After they kill their first target successfully, they're then able to kill every night. After they kill their second target they gain basic defence. Etc etc etc. They get more powerful with each kill (though pestilence still outshines them).
.
Sadly I only ever got that role once and I immediately died of poison lol
.
.
Also I forgot about the other neutral role that is both super chill, and the bane of existence:
executioner.
.
Ten idiots can random lynch a person for no reason, but if my target was a freaking werewolf and everyone knows I STILL couldn't get them bloody well lynched <_<
.
And now I've probably rambled too much haha
Haha! I haven't had that happen before that would've been hilarious.
.
Yes I've heard of the whole witch thing, sounds really cool tbh. I feel sorry for new players cause it's confusing when you start but now the extra roles are gonna add even more chaos.
.
I want to play a juggernaut so bad that sounds so OP. Having that much power would just destroy the game if you played it right.
.
Being the exe is just annoying cause it's so easy for people to make a fake will and if someone claims to be the same role as someone else when they can't be you have to someone compare their claims and pick the right one to kill. the stress man the stress.
.
Hahaha I love the rambles, I very much enjoy listening to people go on a tangent about something they like.
It happened to me on more than one occasion. I actually got transported on a night I was trying to clean someone WITH my target. So, of course, that person got visited by a werewolf. Bloodbath by the morning and my role was invisible in the graveyard. To make it even more entertaining there was a second janitor in the game. I'd already cleaned someone once and the other janitor used all their cleans, so by the end of it Half the graveyards roles were invisible
.
Werewolf was such a difficult role but the chaos it caused was awesome.
.
Well luckily for new players I don't think witches and that stuff are in the base game mode, and the original version still only had town vs mafia vs serial killer last I saw? Mind you that was over a year and a half ago.
Honestly Juggernaut seemed to be an extremely difficult role. The few games I played where there was one as soon as the message "killed by a juggernaut" appears everyone goes on hyper-alert. It's pretty easy for investigative roles to find them, and it takes several nights for them to power up.
.
Haha well I usually played on chaos mode anyway. Much harder to win, but a lot more variety. Of course you run the risk of having a game with 5 bodyguards and 1 arsonist on the loose, and all the bodyguards being lynched because no one believes the game would randomly generate that many bgs
.
Whenever I was an ex my target always died (leading us back to the jester conundrum) or else someone attacked me night 1 and then "outed" me as a serial killer and then the town lynched me. Haha it was fun if you could get the target lynched, though. Just sit back and watch them scramble to lynch you or enlist you on their side.
.
Jailor and mayor always gave me way too much stress haha
Hahaha! That's amazing, love it when everything works out like that.
.
Yeah I'm pretty sure in the classic play it's just the basic roles but I haven't played salem in awhile so idk.
Ah yeah I guess that's true, guess it makes the overall role more exciting if it's difficult.
.
I think I played maybe 2 games on chaos and it was a nightmare, fun but oh my god it was so difficult trying to figure out who's who when majority of the game are mafia or some other role with attacking abilities.
.
I've played a game once where the mafia killed everyone and I was exe, they didn't know I was an jailor so they let me live. It was just me and the last mafia member cause the others got lynched and so they were already saying gg in the chat and saying shite like town sucks and then I just offed him that night. So satisfying.
.
Being mayor feels more like the town controls you then you control the town and you can't just out yourself the first few nights so you're constantly on edge on whether the town with lynch you for being sus or mafia will kill you.
.
Bruh it's such a good game, I really gotta start playing it again thanks for bringing it up hahah
Lol it's funny the way the different game modes put you in different mentalities.
.
Idk if you ever played vigilantics. Literally one of the shortest game modes and every day half the town was dead haha
.
With the expansion they had added a couple modes. 1 was "lovers" where the game randomly assigns most of the players a partner at the start of the game. If both you and your partner live to the end, and either of your factions win, both partners win as well. If either partner dies, however, the other partner will die the next night. Was chaotic but a lot of fun because you'd end up with like a jailor screaming at the entire town "DON'T LYNCH THE PLAGUEBEARER, THEY'RE ON MY SIDE!"
.
Then there was a mode that was Coven vs town where you'd have 4 witches and everyone else was a specific type of town member. There was always a mayor and always a crusader, and another TP. Honestly one of the most organized game modes because it always started with:
Mayor doing a reveal
Crusader revealing who they were and guarding the mayor. The remaining TP would protect the crusader and the rest of the Town went about trying to figure out who the four coven members were.
.
The coven leader (classic witch powers) usually would just direct town members to visit the mayor then so any travelling roles got killed by the crusader
Haha that's awesome. I love when you get to do reveals at the end like that. Jailor was always so stressful and I was God awful at it most of the time. Though it's much easier in normal mode when you actually have an idea of wtf you're looking for.
.
i agree about the mayor thing. If you can do a sudden reveal at the end and win the game that feels amazing, but otherwise it's honestly just stressful. People lose their minds on you.
.
Or on the reverse you end up with the mayors who go insane right from the start and start lynching people for no reason at all and then if you're a TP you have to protect that idiot
.
I hope you have fun if you do play it :) the coven expansion was fun when it came out. I can't even imagine what else they're added since then
I haven't tried any of those new modes but I'm so excited to try, gonna be a noob when I first attempt them though hahaha
.
Yeah hate mayors that just decide they can use their votes that way, they end up getting most of the town killed.
.
Should play a game with me sometime if you're down. Neither, I haven't played or looked at it for ages.
The game is town of Salem.
