Not distance. The study showed that regardless of distance there tended to be higher fares applied PER MILE for trips starting in neighborhoods with a lower population of white residents to other groups. There are however flaws that can pointed out in the methods and metrics of the study- but the overarching point it that even if this is an algorithm and free of intentional or even unintentional bias- other factors line up in such a way that it creates a ripple effect where a “pebble” of bias can cause echos throughout other systems as one system feeds into and off of another. It’s a chain of cause and effect that ultimately skews by racial demographic.

Well.... except that it doesn’t necessarily. Another “flaw” in the study is that we don’t have the ECONOMIC data if these neighborhoods. Often times, when people refer to “non white neighborhood” they are saying “poor neighborhood.” So another way to look at it is potentially not that the algorithms show some type of racial bias- it may be that they show ECONOMIC bias. If the latter is the case- it would effect all people of all races who were poorer- the optimal solution wouldnt be based in racial measures, and all people who are affected could and perhaps should stand together on the issue. It’s important that with these types of study we can understand that there is clearly some type of discrimination (by default higher fees for certain things is a type of discrimination- discrimination isn’t always a dirty word. I’m pretty discriminate about what I put in my mouth for example.)
