Well- arguably they didn’t HAVE to be burned alive- that was and still is quite controversial. Largely why they often let movements like CHAZ just go on their own nowadays. A counter cultural movement- people often largely mentally adolescent- thrives on resistance and attention. Attention brings supporters. Counter measures breed sympathy and to someone looking to “Rebel”- butting heads just strengthens their resolve. Much like “feeding the trolls” when someone gets dug in- even when they know they are wrong- their resolve to save face and not back down usually increases. The stakes get high enough and logic leaps outtie window. Ever talked to (or been) that person that has some relatively minor life problem and thinks that starting their whole life over or ending their life or some extreme measure is the only way “out”?

Same basic idea but on a larger scale- and as these groups often tend to be isolated or self isolating and members tend to share similar beliefs- you get an echo chamber that reinforces the sentiments and trends either to extremism or resignation.
