I’d say that unless you have proof that the companies themselves directly fanned the flames- that you ant blame a tool for how it is used- I would also say that there were riots before social media. So even if we found a way to blame social media and not the people involved- we can’t blame them for the riots, only perhaps at best for making them easier or allowing better coordination etc.

But whatever you give people, whatever you invent- we will turn it into a way to hurt people. You can’t even give us dirt. We will throw it in someone’s eyes, rub it in their wounds. We will smelt it and make more effective weapons and horrors. We take holy books on forgiveness and non judgment and turn them to hate. We can quite literally weaponize love. We are likely the most dangerous life form in the known universe, and I suspect that we are possibly the most inherently dangerous species in existence.
