I’ve covered this meme before. But I’ll cover it another way. There is another way to look at this: colleges make huge amounts of money off athletics and other programs. Generally speaking the students who’s talents make that money don’t directly get any. So let’s say you hire a tuba player, $20k a year, a tick above minimum wage work many places and a tick below in others. You also will likely need some sort of health benefits, insurance, using the basic cost calculator for cost to hire and the low end costs of upkeep- you’re about $30k in on this tuba player. Due to various realities of bands and their proximity to college students- there are liabilities that using non students could pose.

So it makes sense from. Colleges perspective- to have on demand bands and such available, and there are savings or profits to the school from the students labors which the student doesn’t directly see- so not only is there an element of fairness in reducing their tuition in recognition, but schools often want to attract talented and well rounded students who will hopefully become, or have a greater chance of becoming, notable alumni who bring prestige and possible future donations to the school as well as attendance from those who want to go to a school with such a reputation.
