Oh there are a lot of unpopular opinions of China my friend. But it has nothing to do with sports

Maybe. Even “spectatorless” games are still likely to lead to people doing “home tail gates” and of course- the traditional gatherings for the games and the big games- most team sports asides e sports pretty much by their natures and traditions will encourage gatherings wether they have fans in bleachers or not. But.... that’s a delicate thing. Sports is like a religion to many people. Football (American) is one of America’s only cultural traditions- something created by Americans and shared as a major part of historical and modern “American Tradition” and not a tradition brought to America through its many cultures.

Couple that with the already tense atmosphere in the country and canceling the sports season isn’t just an economic hit- the moral hit- but the possibility of literal riot- not just an American thing- people all over the world actually start riots because of sports. So there is a balancing act.

Democratic republics don’t really do anything particularly well. There’s a lot of red tape and steps and opinions and consensus needed for most things- the nature of trying to balance everyone’s wants and needs is that you usually end up with something that isn’t specialized to be great at any one thing or make any one type of person very happy- but it will usually be decent at most things and make lots of people reasonably happy.

So that’s part of America’s Covid problems. If we closed up all travel and borders until this was over, forcefully quarantined the infected or potentially exposed, rigorously tested and forced everyone to be prisoners in their homes- we MAYBE would be doing much better. But... we can’t do those things. We can’t even agree as a nation or government to force people to wear masks or what “stage” of quarantine we should be in.

It’s a Balancing act between appeasing people and being prudent against Covid. Cancelling sports won’t stop people from being careless or foolish or cavalier. Heck- people who felt cooped up and deprived early in quarantine went out in force once restrictions were eased. So who’s to say that people feeling deprived and disappointed at the loss of sports- even if there was no civil unrest- wouldn’t just “comfort themselves” by making those weekends ones where they decide to go to lakes and beaches and such? That the “Covid rebels” feeling slighted by the decision wouldn’t hold mass gatherings out of spite? There’s a lot to consider here even if it seems silly we can’t go one year without a salad bowl or whatever. I won’t miss the sports- but I know some folks practically live for them.
