It’s the meme version of a certain popular campaigning slogan. The world is pretty bad right now in a lot of ways, and it has always been bad in a lot of ways. The idea- if we keep moving forward instead of trying to go back, keep changing and trying to do better- hopefully someday we could have a lot less problems. It’s nice to have fantasies of a rose colored “better time” sometimes- as long as they are fantasies. If you start believing you fantasies you’re delusional; and if you let your fantasies of bygone days stop you from growth and change, things very likely won’t get any better.

Except, this is less "The world was better then", and more "My life was simpler then".

I get what you’re saying, and there is a distinction there- but I’d say that it isn’t critical. The reason why so many people pine for bygone days really boils down to- the world was simpler- even if things were worse. We saw it post World wars and in places like post soviet Russia. Those who loved before cell phones and ubiquitous computers sometimes opine, and plenty of meme and serious study will show you people who resist or mock progress- because it represents not just the unknown- but the new. Learning, changing, growing.

The world is a confusing place in 2020, even for those born within the last couple of decades. Much change in short times. Me too, LGBTQ+, trans issues, pronouns, jokes and shows that people laughed at on prime time for 20+ years are suddenly being cancelled or forced to change. In 1990 the world was very different culturally. Even more in 1980, and so on.

To be blunt- the further we go back in history (to a point) and or the further we go back in our own lives- in general the world gets smaller. Things become more homogeneous. We have to worry less about consequences and think less about what we say or do. That’s appealing- to almost anyone (unless you happen to be in one of the groups that wasn’t thought about much at the time. But- even then there are those who prefer negatives that are almost codified to ambiguity that comes with positives.)

But- conclusion and TL:DR- we can’t go back. The fantasy of going back, in our own lives or in relatively recent history is less about objectively better and more about seeming easier, simpler. “Better”, from our perspective when viewed in a certain light. Day dreaming of a simpler life is normal, even healthy. But we should always be mindful that what is passed is passed.
