Lots of creatures- even lots of people- don’t live a whole year. Birthdays are less about celebrating the passage of time and more about an excuse to celebrate the existence of a person whom you are glad exists. “I’m happy you are alive and we happen to be alive at the same time and get to share existence together.” Of course we could and should simply show our gratitude for things like this every day- Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, the winter holidays and things like Valentine’s Day- “everyday should be <X holiday>”.

But it’s often impractical to live that way, especially when you have many people you care about and your own life to live. So such holidays act as a reminder- “hey- be grateful for people in your life. Be grateful to be alive. If for one day put asides petty matters and mundane routines and just revel in this person and the fact they enhance your life.”
