What is wrong with people? This is partially due to the fact that our “ President” openly mocks handicapped people. And partially due to the fact that Americans have become so vapid, by seeking internet fame, that they have lost any sense of what it is like to have compassion for those that are born different. But hey, at least people enjoyed Americans exploiting their children’s emotions, scarring them for life, and getting tons of likes, right? Isn’t that why our founding fathers fought oppression ? Or how how about the 600,000 soldiers that died in the civil war to end slavery? What will we leave behind? TIK TOK videos and and 6 weeks worth of Black Lives Matter Facebook posts? Wise up.

Sad but true- people often forget there is a person behind the face we use for laughs in things like memes or these challenges. Most people wouldn’t want their face to become the next “bad luck Brian” or such- although sometimes people do embrace it, or at least lean in to it as for better or worse they now have that exposure. But it’s bad enough to take an unflattering photo of someone and use it this way- but to take people who have genetic or other conditions or have suffered accident or disease and point and laugh like a carnival show is a very sad reflection of our society.

The woman in the picture is one of several high profile voices against this sort of cyber bullying. I recently read an article that interviewed a collection of people who’s photos had been used in such a way and it was very moving what they had to say. It’s not something parents should teach children, or that anyone should really aspire to put in to society, that it is ok to laugh at people for looking different, or that you should be scared of or single out such people for how they look.

As much as society embraces ideas like the story of the “ugly duckling” or any host of movies about the “outsider”/“underdog” who is beautiful despite being different- we tend not to practice these lessons in our daily lives. It’s quite empty to read tales of high morality to children and such showing they should embrace others for their positive values, but then show behavior that completely contradicts that. The take away lesson they are left with being that these are virtues you’re supposed to pretend to have when people are watching, but that in private or where you feel free from consequence it is alright to behave otherwise.

Sadly not. I don’t recall the details as I came upon it by chance while reading the news. I can tell you the main woman interviewed for the article was Lizzie Velasquez, and the woman in this photo is Melissa Blake. Both were featured.
