There's actually some serious plausible explanations to why they do this, and in a few studies back in the 90s they discovered that when a person consumes dihydrogen monoxide in space they start to bloat around their core, along with the excess going into waste, which can really hinder the work done on the ISS. Digging around even further I found out that people would easily believe these kinds of facts if you make it long enough and throw in words that sound like they're legitimate.
