James Cameron actually put this to rest before it began- but people don’t listen. They literally tested and tested until they had a piece of wood that wouldn’t support the weight of both and still float. Size is irrelevant here. The EXACT piece of wood that Rose was on in the film, in real life that would not support both actors. So for that specific piece of wood- the two of them couldn’t have both been saved.
Plus, there was a mythbusters episode about this one too. If they were both on it, it would have sunk down enough that both of them would've froze.
They did find that it wouldve worked, ONLY if they had tied the life jacked underneath the door, but i think we can forgive them (the characters) for not thinking of a relatively clever solution given the circumstances
Very true. Even after decades of people commenting on, from the comfort of home with all that time plenty of folks still think space is the big problem. So I couldn’t fault Jack and Rose, freezing, traumatized in the moment, for not being able to puzzle out a way to make it work. At no point is it implied that either is a special forces commando or rural survivalist, an engineer or anything of the sort. So I give them a pass regardless.
