Critics- traditionally- use different standards than audiences. Classically, critics didn’t involve “meta” like politics or such in their reviews- they are reviewing a movie. The question isn’t wether the Star is a sex offender- it’s wether they acted well. It isn’t if the production actually blew up an entire country to get a shot- it’s wether that shot was good. In the olden days, critics scored films based on a background and knowledge in art and cinema. They were looking at how the directors used the camera, how the writers subverted or created worn tropes, and a lot of more high concept art stuff than simply “is it fun to watch?” “Is it cool?”
There is a big difference between your favorite greasy curb side burger place and a Michelin Star restaurant that serves Foie gras and $2,000 wine. You might give both 5 stars- but most folks would probably prefer the burger joint. Your average Joe doesn’t really take to things like Caviar. Some pallets are more sensitive and seasoned. That’s an old school critic. Their scores reflect the view of a cinephile. Newer age critics often just review a film on how much spectacle there is, how much “fun” they had. But you can’t compare a remake to an original if you’re giving advice on what to see at the theater since the original isn’t in wide release in theaters is it? You can only compare it to what is out at the time to recommend out of all the movies, of a person is going to have time or money for one this weekend- which would YOU say to see?
Where audiences and critics often differ (although critics have becoming increasingly less professional over the years) is that audiences can and will bomb films because of politics. Because they don’t like an actor (not that the actor did a poor job- just they don’t like the person,) for many reasons which have nothing to do with the film itself but have to do with the world outside the film. I haven’t watched the new Mulan. I do not plan to for my own reasons not relating to the actual film- so I can’t rate it, and if I watched it- my biases would likely shape my enjoyment of it wouldn’t they?
Her acting is drier than the leftover breads my dear mother keeps in the freezer to feed our chickens.
idk how low your standards have to be for you to be ok with watching her deadass, disfuncting facial muscles go on for 2 hours?
