I mean, it's called 'progress' for a reason. There really is no end goal

I get sick of the sentiment. I was reading an op ed by a very pro gun rights gentleman the other day, and he said “despite being rated #1 in the country for gun laws, the state isn’t going to stop...” well.... yeah. I mean- they’ve had charities to feed hungry children for over 200 years. And at least in many nations- the number of hungry kids is much lower than it was once upon a time. But- does that mean the job is done and we don’t have to worry anymore? No man. 1 hungry kid is too many hungry kids. We will probably never get it to zero- but if we try we will get as close as we possibly can. Probably make things better than they are now. Just imagine if humanity had gotten to feudalism and just stopped there. Most people reading this... if they could read and weren’t dead- would be serfs or beggars and such.

Overall we can argue that things are “better” for much of the world than they ever have been. But things are still no where near perfect, or even to where most people in the world aren’t living in some form of poverty or oppression. We can look forward at how far we have left to go while also looking back and giving ourselves credit for how far we’ve come- but to look at only one or the other- to either declare things $hit because society isn’t perfect; or to declare our work done because things are good for us and ours, or because of how far we’ve come from the past- those two extremes are foolish.

Progressives won’t stop because progress doesn’t stop. You can’t have a 1950’s or 1780’s or any other past society frozen in time while the internet and 3D printers and all the new things yet to come are always advancing. If someday we have teleportation, or readily available super fast transit- what’s that going to do to borders and concepts of nations and identity when someone from Calcutta can easily commute everyday to Perth or Edmonton? The internet already gives us a taste of how exposure to folks far outside our “normal circle” goes.

You can’t stop progress unless... you stop progress. You can’t tune out the world and still participate in it. Time, life, society move forward. You move forward too or you get left behind. You can fight tooth and nail and maybe slow progress down- maybe not love to see some of the changes- but once they start the consequences cannot be stopped. Not so long as people have freedom and will of any sort. So we can be part of the solution or part of the problem- but like it or not- change is inevitable and those who do successfully manage to drag society back to more conservative pasts are seldom remembered well in history. You will find they are almost always the villain in the future if you give it long enough.
