The Nazis synthesized methamphetamine inspired by the knowledge of amphetamines the Americans had used to dope in the 1936 Olympics. It was a critical part of Nazi strategy early in the war and more or less held up as a miracle drug and handed out like candy- often LITERALLY. No prescription was required for civilians and both soldiers and civilians could get meth laced chocolate candy.

But right up to the present day, The US and other world militaries use amphetamines. In WW2 the US issued amphetamines to troops and pilots. The USAF used Dexadrine well Into the 2000’s and still has Modafinil on an approved list of drugs that can be used to combat fatigue in service members needing to be alert beyond the normal bounds of human ability. Pilots could even be grounded for refusing to take the drugs when requested to.

The subject of doping in militaries in general is rather interesting, but if you haven’t read up on Nazi use of methamphetamines it is interesting stuff. Meth was a key component to the “blitzkrieg” strategy and likely success of the Nazis in the early war- allowing their soldiers to keep a pace with the machines they were using for war and by moving day and night, make advances that many wouldn’t think possible. Eventually the Nazis discovered, and somewhat acknowledged, the addiction and health risks of heavy meth usage- and started regulating the drugs with civilians and scaling back its use in combat.
