The little noise, or the look they give when you step on their paw on accident. And... when we have to say goodbye to them. If only humans felt the way many do about dogs about each other- if only seeing another human suffer broke more people’s hearts the same way; if only the worst thing we felt about other people was sad when we had to say goodbye- what a different world it would be.

Humans do mean things on purpose to each other so it’s kinda hard to look at them the same way as dogs who have no intentions, they are just animals

Debatable. The study of canine behavior is largely subjective observation. Quantifying and comparing things like intelligence and intent is hard enough with humans, who we’ve studied and observed deeper and longer, and ARE human so have some relation to- and yet even with the ability to empathize to fellow humans we often cannot understand the emotions and motivation of our fellow humans. The cognition of animals is an infant as a serious scientific study. We watch a dog and we BELIEVE it acts without malice or such-

But is that the case? Are they merely acting on instinct? It seems that dogs do have some capacity to think and act counter to what instinct would theoretically dictate. So then are they thinking and feeling creatures that lack any capacity for malice or hate? The verdict is out. We can’t even really declare that humans have any control over our own actions or aren’t just acting on instinct and so called higher thought is just how we explain the things we would have done either way.

We choose to believe that dogs hold no capacity for malice in them. Of course- what then is more endearing- a creature which literally cannot intentionally cause harm and so does no harm, or a creature which is the capacity but chooses not to? Dogs are wonderful and amazing creatures- but so are humans. We don’t communicate complex things so well with dogs- so it’s no wonder that they are often the totems upon which we humans project whatever it is we want to see.
