Well... Ireland has had some pretty bad luck. But I think the Irish have done well. Hear me out- there were famines and hardships, oppression and bigotry- but through it all, the Irish keep their chins up. Luck is a relative thing- for Bill Gates not being able to get the color of Jetstream he wanted is bad luck, for most people being able to to just take a trip on a private plane would be generally good luck. Your dad finds your <whatever contraband> right before some big event and you’re grounded. Bad luck? But someone who doesn’t have a dad might consider themselves lucky if they came home and their dad was there, even if he was about to ground them. Family and community were long time staples of Irish life. Not every Irish person had those things of course- we are generalizing here aren’t we? I mean- a man or woman, at the end of a hard day with all the troubles of the world, being at home with the family, perhaps some time with the friends over drinks- these little moments....

... if you appreciate them, can make anyone feel lucky to be alive, even if life isn’t perfect. The world makes plenty of problems. That is as true now as it was thousands of years ago. The problems change and sure- we can argue that overall some people have it “better” or “easier” than others- but while the Irish have had some hard times, I can’t say it would have ever been a terrible time to be Irish. Luck is where we see it. If you wake up in the hospital and the doctors tell you that a piano fell on you- you could call that bad luck, or the fact you’re awake, alive, able to understand what they are saying and not dead or brain dead- we could also call that good luck. Not as good perhaps as no piano falling on you... but then again, if you marry a doctor/nurse you met there and go on to be a motivational speaker- maybe it was the best thing that could have happened to you? Life is strange. Steer into the skid.
