Many may not believe this, but Pokémon is still going strong. Also, it might come as a surprise, but I myself still enjoy it. I confess I am somewhat of a genwunner. But Pokémon Go has caught me up a little.
So my first exposure to the franchise was actually the German dub (which ran on RTL/KRTL) of the first and second seasons. What little German I know I learned from this dub (and a few others). I remember always mishearing the line "Komm' und schnapp' sie dir" (the translation of "Gotta catch 'em all") as "Come and Snapchat deer." I knew that couldn't possibly be what it was saying, but it was still funny to me.
Still waiting on Gen VI and Greninja in Pokémon Go though...
This series made absolutely no sense.
.
A story about a bunch of 9 year olds being allowed to freely roam the country side, catching and fighting superpowered animals, taking on the literal mafia, and all in the hopes of getting a shiny pin to put on their jacket.
.
We had:
-pokemon forming the equivalent of biker gangs
-Pokemon being abused to the point of near death (no, this isn't an exaggeration - I'm talking about Charmander)
-a surprising misunderstanding of basic physics
-Children being set on fire/electrocuted regularly
-Children raising their siblings because the father fucked off
-A TALKING pokemon that no one seemed to think was of any value whatsoever next to Pikachu's over-hyped sparky-sparky moveset
.
Not to mention a bunch of seemingly adult or teenage women throwing themselves at a 10 year old (Gary Oak).
.
Ash even died/had his soul leave his body on more than one occasion.
.
I loved every minute of it.
