Not a lot they can do about last minute stuff, and I imagine high volumes of rescheduling could be a pain in the ass to deal with, probably worth deterring.

Yeah. I mean... is it unfair in principal? Yes it is. But when an airline had an issue- potentially hundreds or thousands of people and millions of dollars are involved. For them to move things around is a pretty big deal- and they generally take all prudent steps to prevent such issues. But when you have an issue with lite flight- wether you did everything you could to prevent it and practiced regimented and regulated procedures to mitigate the odds or not... it’s not really the same thing in scope or much else. Are there cases where maybe you shouldn’t be charged- or they should? Yeah. I’d say yes. But... that would require an in-depth arbitration process and a way to decide who’s “fault” it was or wether a delay could have been prevented or wether you really “needed” to cancel....
