I normally wouldn't believe it. But americans tend to clap for anything. Also depends if the class hated the profesor. Wich they probably did if he tended to pull stuff like this often

I hate it when people start clapping at the end of things that are or should be the bare expected ending of whatever. Clapping should only be done when something has been accomplished beyond what can normally be expected. Clapping at the end of a theatre production that you enjoyed? Yes. Clapping at the end of movie in a movie theatre? No. Clapping because the pilot landed the plane like they're expected to do? No. Clapping because the pilot landed the plane after hours of severe turbulence, they've run out of gas and had to perform and emergency landing? Yes.
