She loved him more than herself (if you can, avoid such uncontrollable feeling)
He didn't have a clue (what a clueless fool) and went on with his life.
The little mermaid was a love letter to Hans Christian Andersen’s male interest.
The man was his Prince who went off and married a woman while Hans Christian Andersen was like the mermaid and had to let his love go because being bi/gay was not something people openly did. And there was rumors that the man he loved didn’t love him back because he was straight and always saw himself more of a friend.
It’s truly sad when you think of it like that and than Disney goes and makes the ending happy which though yeah I get they just wanted a happy ending but probably unknowingly they let a bi/gay couple finally have their happy ending.
