I still hold the theory that the stormtroopers missed so much in the original trilogy because they were told too. Even Obi-one said that only the empire was so precise in their attacks when they found the Jawa transport attacked. And they did a great job on Hoth hitting the entrenched resistance fighters from great distances.

It's literally confirmed in-movie that they missed to herd Han and friends long enough to install a tracking beacon onto the Falcon. It's how the Empire found the Rebel base on Hoth.
