The backpack story is true. After 3 years in jail, 2 of which were in solitary confinement, the charges were dropped. 2 years later he killed himself.

I surprised he didn't try to kill himself one part of the year he was out and it took him 2 years after. That's not a joke, it's straight morbid. Compared to 12 hrs alone in a drunk box or 12 days in jail with other prisoners to talk with, i'm going 12 days. Also, solitary rarely solves the problem it's intended to solve, all it does is let someone fume and drive themselves a little bit crazier/pissed than they already are. If you're angry, those thoughts just fester, there is no release. If it's because jail psychologically broke you, you're only going to stray further from reality. If you're a victim, the pain is just going to become worse. Obviously, for some, it's the only way to keep others safe from them, but it's become far more widespread than it needs to be.

Solitary confinement is actually really hard the human psyche. It's actually one of the worst things you can do without physically touching a person.

Yes, solitary confinement takes away everything a human needs to tell apart what is real and what isn't. After 3 days people start getting hallucinations and 15 days is enough to cause permanent psychological damage. 2 years of this torture is something I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy.
