I had one rooster, Cuddles, who was great. Whenever we would give out treats, he would take one and then drop it in front of the hens for them to eat. He NEVER kept any treats for himself. He even did the little mating dance with his wings dropped for his hens. But 99% of the time roosters are jerks and just a pain in the butt. They scratch and bite up the backs of the hens because they are forceful jerks. And I don't think they are great protectors (somehow the rooster always survives when animals get in to the chicken pen - I'm convinced they just sacrifice the hens to save themselves).

More than one rooster causes trouble. With 75 chickens at one point 5 roosters and 70 hens. The Roosters would have a group of hens that would stay with him. Exploring the fields with the same 8 or 10 hens.

A Rooster wrote this. ... while these things are not untrue... there is much more.
