I like Russian war movies. They’re grim and bleak and show war as a frightening thing we should avoid at all cost

Uh... The happiest war movie the US has ever put out is probably Pearl Harbor, and that's not really a war movie, it's a fucked up love triangle that happened during WW2. If you can watch Saving Private Ryan, Platoon, Full Metal Jacket, The Thin Red Line, Hacksaw Ridge, We Were Brothers.. hell even Windtalkers (Nicholas Cage only going like 25%, but still too much), without feeling sadness or the pure insanity of it, you're not human, you're just a thing. I would add Apocalypse Now, but I don't consider that a war movie. it's an adaptation of Heart of Darkness, which is about the savagery of human nature, that just so happened to be set in Vietnam. (Great fucking movie and for the sake of ranking "war" movies I have to put it at 1 or 2, which if you classify it as a "war" movie, it is, simply to stave off an argument).

Oh, and Letters from Iwo Jima and Flags of our Fathers as a duo; THAT was... They demand to be watched back to back, in either order.
