Fun fact; It's more energy efficient to charge an EV from a diesel or petrol generator than to drive an internal combustion engine.

For the same reason regular hybrids (think Prius, etc.) have higher mpgs. An electric motor is more efficient than a gas/diesel engine plus due to scale the larger generator would be more efficient than a smaller engine in a car.

@thinny1234 is right. In addition the combustion engine in the generator can run at near top efficiency the whole time unlike the engine in a car.
