Both sides need to be more polite, but if you're gonna ask someone to come in on their day off, you shouldn't be surprise if they say no.

can't say you don't want to work, but you can say oh sorry its my day off so I've already had 3 mimosa's (or beers) while laying in the sun getting a tan for the last hour. their response will tell you a lot about who you're working for and how they really feel about you.

Yeah, and the other side should be a lot more to the point about it too. "Hey, we are short-handed tonight, so if you are available to come in on your night off, we'll give you time-and-a-half, even if it's just a couple of hours." I get that text message, I would strongly consider coming in, because they clearly know it's a favor, not an expectation.
