I felt like making a tiny museum in small doses, so here goes.
Looking at this gigantic spider and knowing it represents the artist's mom, you can feel like she wasn't a very loving daughter, but on the contrary! Spiders and modern art are both unjustly rejected. For Louise Bourgeois, spiders are obviously excellent weavers (the name arachnid comes from the legend of Arachne, a mortal who could weave better than Athena, who was petty af and made her a spider), and that was her mother's job. She describes spiders as patient, caring, protective, as they repel mosquitoes, and caring for their family, which is why she added some marble eggs underneath her sculpture. This statue is a testimony to her admiration and love for her mother, who died when she was 21 (L.B. attempted suicide because of it). 10m high, 9m wide, just don't mess with her mom.
Other pieces, less known, represent a dysfunctional family dynamic, with a red room cut by wires to represent aggression in their home.
