Jared only insisted on keeping the guy company after the guy told him an exceedingly elaborate tale about how he was so cripplingly lonely and depressed that he was not only ashamed enough to lie about being on a date, but he was also more or less willing to act out having a date just to make himself feel better

Jared could have just said "tough break" and fucked off, but instead he stuck around to make certain this person didn't feel so alone for at least a little while. He pushed for nothing else, and left again after
