i personally dont know the science behind it im just a regular dude and all that but in my opinion i do feel there is a bit of a reliance on medications to fix mental issues when in reality a lot of life adjustment would really fix the problem. Figuring out how to goal set and plan gain work ethic and push towards goals will make you 10 times happier and help you to grow more than just trying to solve the direct problem. I feel like everyone has different ways of dealing with problems and so its not cookie cutter but thats why you need to find people who dont just suppress the side effects but help you locate and solve the root of the problem.
A good psychiatrist actually does try to find the root of issues before going to medication. From personal experience medicine comes in when there's a potential chemical imbalance in how the body is functioning which can cause various issues.
There are bad psychiatrists though that just go for medication for everything but there's bad people in every profession.
