I was really hoping they'd say thousands of feet through the air and just imagining centuries of bewildered fisher-people being pelted with bits of exploded whale and not having a clue what was going on so they just invent some God mythos to explain it away

And what does it say that instead of afraid I find myself fascinated instead? Imagine being able to see and study an ecosystem that develops all from a single corpse.
