i've noticed, if you understand someone's point of view, or understand why they did something, others just assume you agree with them

Believe me- I sympathize. People have trouble understanding the difference between presenting an opinion and supporting an opinion. Couple that with the inability most people have to reconcile the seemingly conflicting and usually complex nuances of life and…. Lots of anger to the messenger. Lol.
