Actually that’s a whole big part of this story and many similar stories. While various characters are directly involved in attempting to help reach the goal, many characters either through the majority of the story or parts of it act more as moral support for the person(s) on the journey.
Arwen quite literally served as moral support for Aragorn- and not a profile pic but while he was at war she wove him a banner, a flag to wave, since as price for hand and her immortality Elrond wouldn’t allow them to marry until Aragorn had taken the thrones of Gondor and Arnor. Other supporting characters offer aid at times as able in the form of advice or material support such as provisions or shelter, equipment, transport, accommodations etc. however there are usually expressly or implicitly many characters who can’t actually participate for one reason or another or who’s participation probably wouldn’t make much sense and may harm more than help so simply wish well to those on the journey.
Specific to LOTR Hobbits make unlikely heroes but I don’t think the point is so much that anyone can be a hero as it is that heroes can be anyone. We see that Boromir and many others have the seeming credentials to be heroes but fall short for various reasons, and one of the major antagonists to the series who is one of the most successful dangers to the quest is a river folk- basically a hobbit- so we see that villains can also be almost anyone too. Sometimes, perhaps often, “thoughts and prayers” and such are more about looking like a person cares or making that person feel like they did something when they did not. That said we cannot ignore that sometimes people just can’t do anything meaningful to help, a good example is when a loved one passes away. They can be there for you but can’t take your pain or bring them back.
In many situations like this, knowing that people are thinking about you or caring about you or rooting for you can mean a lot. Throughout history soldiers have documented that simply knowing that there were people at home supporting them or waiting for their safe return helped them mentally or emotionally. Athletes and performers often are inspired to push themselves, keep going, or succeed because of fans. Even in everyday life, a single parent raising a baby gets no help from that baby or possibly child, but love of that child and the perception of that child’s love can be what they need to push on. Many of us have come to places in our careers or love lives etc. where the encouragement of friends gave us the strength or courage to go for our dreams. It is a powerful thing to not feel alone or to feel like you have a reason beyond practical necessity for struggling.
This is just a warm up for these thumbs. I don’t even come here to post, I’m actually just here as part of my training to keep my title as world thumb wrestling champion. You can’t get the same speed, dexterity, and endurance better through anything but typing. For strength training you can thrust them into bowls of rice or…. Ahhhhh. Nice try. I’m not giving you all my secrets young blood. See you at Thumbwars 2026 for the next title match!!!!!!
