True. I’ve met very few people who actually seem to treasure freedom or any grand ideal so much as they claim to but demonstrate actions and words that suggest they simply justify advocating systems that support their desired lifestyle under a banner of high minded idealism.
Of course, the idea of a world collapse leading to the embrace of any particular world view is a bit silly. It only works if such a catastrophe leaves mainly those like minded people in a position of power. Generally speaking- if a group of their ideal would have the power to see it become the enduring dominant way, they could do so without the collapse of the world.
Most random “fall of society” scenarios do tend to favor mainly conservative ideals though. It isn’t that progressive or conservative ideals have any inherent superiority over the other- it’s more what is in the name. Conservative ideals tend to be older ideas which had past success in helping society survive and thrive through development….
… progressive ideas tend to be based on a current level of advancement and ask how to improve things over the traditional norms. In general in the world today and throughout history, societies that haven’t developed to a point of abundance or live in harsh conditions tend to favor conservatism because progressive ideas involve risks. Not all of them are “winners” and when you have a “loser” a society needs to be able to shoulder the burden of a failed idea to avoid collapse. So if society were to completely fall apart including much or most/all infrastructure etc- conservative ideas would likely become more accepted out of a practical need for survival, at least until society and groups could reach a point where basic needs weren’t a regular concern.
Though what I say above is very general and there are all sorts of caveats and exceptions. Many societies at relatively low levels of development have socially progressive or liberal practices, but that in part comes back to practicality and what people negotiate as social contracts between them.
