The irony is, he did it because he was about to kill himself and he didn't want his dogs to potentially be harmed by anyone in his absence. Still a monster, but a dog-loving monster.

I dunno, I'd like a source for that because I suspect it's an after construction. I mean, were talking about a genocidal narcissistic megalomaniac so it's just as likely he didn't want his dogs to outlive him or love anyone else.

And also it's completely verified, his other two dogs were shot, as well of the dogs of the other people that were with him after Mussolini's death when it was completely clear that the war was coming to an end. The dogs were even exhumed during the process of confirming everything that happened around his suicide.
