I've heard this story before and I've always wonder if, after pouring the gold down his throat, did they go "Holy shit that was a lot of gold we need that back" and cut him open and take it out?

Molten tin is more likely. Less precious, melts at low temp. Perhaps they still retrieved it anyway.

oh yeah, burning out the flesh wouldn’t be a problem. it would still be well usable.
