Yes and no I think. As in- I don’t think a lot of people who “waifu” this or some other characters would maybe be up for a relationship with someone like them in reality, but no in that she maybe isn’t so bad. Depends on where you are coming from and your dysfunction. I’m not here to normalize substance abuse or enable it. Drinking can have long term health impact and is linked to some cognitive disorders. The thing is that from Caffeine to nicotine to “diet pills” and alcohol and even drugs like methadone or pain killers or weed- the world is full of functioning addicts. People who aren’t abusive and manage their responsibilities. A major portion of the mental health field revolves around giving people drugs as needed or at constant regular intervals to change their brain chemistry and/or cognitive and mental states.
What I am saying is that it is called an alcohol problem if it is a problem. If it isn’t a problem it is called drinking. If someone likes to drink or be intoxicated and isn’t abusive or unable to function or causing others issues- it just comes down to a combination of practical factors like if you like who they are when they drink or if you can afford their habits etc, and moral factors like your feelings on substance use etc. someone who never uses cannabis might see a partner who uses it infrequently as having a problem and someone who uses once a month or only at parties might see a partner who uses every Friday as an issue etc. that’s relative between people. I once dated a woman who was nice enough sober but she was just an awesome drunk. Right until the point where she kept going and got black out throw up drunk and I had to clean her messes or our plans were ruined because she couldn’t function. This rarely happened, so most of the time if she wanted to drink a few it meant
a good time. I’ve also known people who when they drink they are mean, abusive, unpleasant to be around, embarrassing or wild and dangerous etc. The girl I mentioned at first- I actually liked her better when she was a little drunk. She was fun and funny and warm. Myself, I rarely drink, it can be years between drinks and then only when socially obligated if that. I have nothing against it and usually have fun but I also have other things to do and prefer to be present. I also am usually traditionally on a work out and nutrition plan and outside of being in competitive shape I COULD fit alcohol in but I’d rather save that space for a soda or juice or maybe a little pastry or some fatty meat etc. So I’m not saying this because I’m some lush or from my personal opinions on alcoholic drinks- which if the world went to prohibition tomorrow I’d largely not effected and have no personal stake in the specific matter.
I’m just saying that I reject the premise that her drinking would make her a bad partner. I will say that drinking heavily can be a response to trauma and unresolved issues and in those cases it is usually healthiest to work through the underlying issues- but end of day, we are all “dysfunctional” and have issues and unhealthy coping and such. It’s more about if two people are compatible in their dysfunction. As for her being violent- that’s another powder keg. Domestic violence and abuse are serious issues and I am reluctant to say anything that could be construed as supporting those things, but I will also say it isn’t like I’ve never met any woman who didn’t like to get a little violent or wouldn’t throw hands.
Some people say it is never ok to hit. Period. In an ultimate sense of “enlightened society” that’s likely true. In a more practical sense we do use violence. The fundamental order of our society hinges on the idea that if you break the rules and nothing else works we will forcibly arrest and detail you and ultimately even kill you if things are severe enough. I don’t want to go through the complex nuances and all the qualifiers between play fighting and wrestling and various forms of mutually reciprocal sexual aggression and such. Partners should never find themselves using actual violence against each other. I’m not going to go into what actual violence means. Use common sense or realize that what you consider acceptable is subjective and circumstantial. Her violent tendencies are likely something she would need to work on expressing differently.
Anime are cartoons and not always super realistic. Often characters can have super human strength and regularly jump on another character with the force of a freight train and it is played for laughs. Obviously in real life if a normal human was in that situation they’d likely die. The old joke about of when Superman and Louis lane have sex he has to be careful not to kill her- though there is truth there. Someone with those sorts of powers could easily accidentally kill you. Often times their partners are superhuman too. If not literally super powered they have some sort of martial arts or tactical abilities that allow them to avoid or endure etc. their partners violence. A super soy Can maybe dodge or catch a throwing knife from their spouse when they come home late but an ordinary person would likely be stabbed by that same knife.
So of course part is a question of creative license. If this person were real would they have such outrageous abilities or behaviors or would they be a little more realistic?
Taking it into the real world- assassin is a rare job in the real world. It is seldom even a job and is usually more of a task- it is less that a single person is an assassin and more that there are people who we sometimes used as assassins but that isn’t their main job. They said, yes. Someone who works for a government or NGO and part of that work involves murder- they are probably wanted or sought after in criminal proceedings. They would likely pose a liability as regardless of legal action there may be people who would want them dead- perhaps even their own handlers. That said- the wanted thing is meh. Lots of people are wanted for serious crimes that go beyond a mech warrant for some tickets or child support or whatever.
The world has many countries. Not all of them are very neighborly with each other. Politics and law are complicated. The executives of the worlds largest consumer diamond company were wanted in the USA for decades. They would be arrested if they stepped foot on US soil but their products still sold and the money they made in the US still went into their pockets and they were still free and living it up overseas. Lots of Americans are wanted in various other countries. That means you need to think a little before you go on vacation. You probably don’t want to try to visit a resort on the countr(y/ies) you are wanted in, you may need to avoid countries they have certain arrangements or relationships with, and you may have places that you’d probably be fine to go but they could decide to turn you in and there is a gamble there.
That said being wanted is meh. There can be some stress and extra considerations but it isn’t like being wanted, even for murder or political crimes, will ruin all chances you have at living your life or force you into hiding. We know where many mob bosses and drug kingpins and such live. We know where accused terrorists and human rights violators live. Many spies and former spies have been outed and we know where they live. Defectors who have given secrets to enemy states and then fled- we know where many live. Many live very public lives. If they aren’t in that country and the country they are in doesn’t want to give them up, there isn’t really an easy and civil path to going and getting them. It isn’t exactly legal or diplomatically wise to send your police to another country to impose your laws on their citizens, and success can be elusive since you are generally from their vantage- kidnapping their citizens or vassals.
So in general I’m going to say that many “waifu” probably are not really great candidates in real life. Many would probably accidentally or might intentionally kill or cripple you. Is YF from spyXfamily a bad “waifu”? I can’t really say the case made in the meme is conclusive.
One thing I can say in general and perhaps about her- most people wouldn’t likely enjoy having her as a partner. Women in anime are often one dimensional. Characters in general regardless of gender- they are often simple. They have a few very strong likes and a few very strong dislikes. They have an archetype and some quirks. But characters often serve a purpose and in anime like SXF they tend to do what the plot requires so long as they generally follow a broad nature.
In simple terms, we often either don’t know the character very well at more than a shallow level or the character is left somewhat intentionally blank so that fans can project onto them. How do you think the average anime woman would react to a lot of your favorite memes? Cruelty, racism, vulgarity etc? Does her characterization strike you as vulgar? Picture an episode of the show and then picture Roy showing her some darn meme or some of the quasi or outright racism and bigotry that so many laugh at online. Does she strike you as the sort that would be into that? She is overall generically sweet and “girly” in her characterization which is played against the contrast in violence and strength of a master assassin.
So I mean… a lot of these “waifu”probably wouldn’t be great in real life because regardless of whatever character flaws they may be given or arguments over wether IRL they would still be able to throw a bus when they are angry etc… many anime characters would likely get boring really quick in real life unless maybe you share their generally limited, specific, and obsessive interests.
This has been "Thinking with the big brain" by guest_. And now, with a counter argument, we present "thinking with the little brain" - Don't care, she's pretty "
