Cats may need occasional baths due to fleas, dandruff build up (may cause allergies in humans), being covered in vehicle oil (our cat loved to chill under neighbour's leaky vehicle), etc. You'll notice if they itch a lot, scritch themselves lots, do the shake, or bite-chew bugs out, that it might be a good time to bath them.
.
Usually, they keep themselves pretty clean, but adjusting them to bath time early on and giving them a bath every ~two months is not a bad thing.
.
Ensure you use lukewarm water and cat-friendly shampoo, dry them well after, and give them a good brushing to ensure the entire coat dries as well.
.
They'll lick-clean-dry themselves anyway, and then proceed to roll in the dust sometimes.
