I mean, with how bad things are in the US and many Mexicans still want to go there it must be rather bad...

They're mostly coming from Central America... AND China... THROUGH Mexico ... thus Mexico is seen as a sort of purgatory. Of course if there was to be a major find of Lithium or Cobolt in Central America the US would invade to "restore law & order" and the immigrants wouldn't be allowed to return home brlecause they'd be suspected of being recruited by the cartels in Mexico to allow US citizens and military contractors to swoop in and set up shop.
