So the only thing I can think of is that their is a flammable gas inside that is heavy enough to stay inside the open bottle, and when you bring a flame to it, the flame will burn it's way down through the gas.

Could be butane... I have seen it act similarly at smaller scales.

4 years late, but it is most likely isopropyl alcohol. Put a spoonful in, swish it around and light it.
